Molecular Evolution, Protein Engineering and Production Facility Director

Description The Purdue Institute of Inflammation, Immunology and Infectious Disease (PI4D) is creating the next generation of diagnostics and therapeutics of infectious diseases by converging research expertise in engineering and advanced analytical solutions with life and physical sciences at Purdue University. Leveraging the university's expertise in structural biology, analytical chemistry, engineering and imaging, PI4D research teams are bringing translatable solutions to many of the diseases that continue to afflict our global population. The institute is structured around four programmatic areas: 1) Imaging and Diagnostics; 2) Control and Intervention; 3) Inflammation and Immunology; and 4) Infectious Diseases. The Molecular Evolution, Protein Engineering and Production (MEPEP) Facility at Purdue University is a new discovery resource facility being created to help serve the research community at Purdue University and our partner institutions and organizations. This is an excellent opportunity to manage the daily operations of the Molecular Evolution, Protein Engineering and Production (MEPEP) Facility at Purdue University. The MEPEP has a two-component operation 1) protein discovery & engineering; 2) protein production. Interested applicants should have expertise in protein design using structure-based rationale, such as antibody epitopes, and protein design based on directed molecular evolution approaches. Carry out protein production experiments using modern laboratory approaches; design, perform, collect and analyze data. Interface with faculty, staff and students to undertake research projects, generate and analyze data and to solve technical problems. Collaborate or assist with recombinant protein design, production and purification methodologies with processing and preparation of materials for analyses. Perform in depth data analyses for these research projects. Develop and implement new experimental methods for routine use. Improve current skills and learn new techniques as appropriate to support new instrumental initiatives. Educate and train technical staff, graduate students and research staff with existing equipment and with new techniques as well as supervise their use of laboratory instruments. Prepare scientific research proposals, articles, reports, posters, seminars and general information relevant for projects that utilize protein design and production technologies. As the facility operation grows, the Manager position will have supervisory responsibilities of other technical personnel in the facility and develop independent innovative projects. Qualification   Required: PhD in molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology, molecular virology or a related field.  Five years' professional experience after receiving a PhD. Applicants need to show evidence of experience in recombinant protein design, production and purification including selection and culture of recombinant host, directed mutagenesis and/or directed molecular evolution approaches projects.  Experience with proposal writing and preparation. Applicants with some proficiency in complementary biophysical techniques to define protein-protein, protein-small molecule interactions would be given preference in order to leverage Purdue's excellence in cryo-EM, X-ray crystallography, proteomics and biophysical analysis capabilities. Ability to work independently to conceive, plan and carry out to completion infectious diseases research.   Ability to engage in quality give-and-take discussions, to take suggestions and be willing to do things in new and different ways.   Skilled in providing/receiving input/feedback and implementing new ideas. Strong oral and written communication skills in order to collaborate and interface with faculty, staff and students to undertake research projects. Preferred: Experience with protein display (phage display and/or yeast display) systems.  Applicants with flow cytometry and qRT-PCR experience.  Additional Information: A background check will be required for employment in this position. FLSA: Exempt (Not Eligible For Overtime) Retirement Eligibility: Defined Contributions Immediately. Purdue University is an EOE/AA employer.
